Jacob Black Biography

Jacob Black is a fictional character in the Twilight book series and is played by the actor Taylor Lautner in the recent Twilight films. Jacob Black belongs to the Quileute tribe based near Washington DC.

Twilight
Jacob plays a very small role in Twilight (first published in 2005, from author Stephanie Meyer). In the first book of the series, Jacob meets his childhood friend Bella, whom he hadn’t spoken to in years. Their initial meeting being on a local beach. Jacob is suggested to be in his mid teens and lives with his father, enjoying fixing up cars in his spare time.

His role develops however, when Bella becomes suspicious of the Cullen family she seeks out Jacob to find out what he knows about Edward and his family. He explains to Bella the story of his ancestors making a treaty with the Vampires (first devised by his own great Grandfather). Jacob explains to Bella about the Cullen family and that Edward could be a vampire. Vampires and Werewolves have long been deadly enemies.

Bella and Jacob’s relationship develops as they spend more time together, although it is evident that Jacob wants to be more than just friends. A theme that continues in later books. Bella indeed loves Jacob but not in the romantic way he so desires.

It is noted that Stepahnie Meyer originally didn’t intend Jacob to ever become such a key character within the Twilight Saga to begin with, however the importance of the character naturally grew and the character seemed to develop by himself. The original Twilight draft was revised during the creation of New Moon to give the character a greater role luckily for all of us Team Jacob fans.

Taylor Lautner, the actor plays as Jacob for all of the Twilight films.

New Moon

Jacob Black develops more as a character in the second part of the Twilight series. Bella and Jacob’s friendship grows stronger; Jacob is smitten and falls in love with Bella however this is not reciprocated as Bella still has strong feelings for Edward. New Moon also reveals Jacob Blacks ‘shape-shifting’ abilities, as a member of the Quileute tribe he is able to transform into a werewolf.

After visiting the movies with Bella, Jacob became very ill and goes home. At home, Jacob mysteriously starts changing, his hands turn into paws, and when he spoke, he growled. It was explained to him by the Quileute tribe that he was a werewolf and that having vampires nearby was what triggered the transformation.

The story evolves and the Quileute tribe begin sensing an imminent threat from a new vampire group and start to petrol the forests. Whilst on patrol with the pack, Jacob saves Bella from the hands of a vampire.

Jacob finds himself spending more time with Bella and inviting her to take part in the tribes activities such as cliff diving. Bella, however, still feels close to Edward and in a desperate bid to feel closer, jumps of the cliff on her own. Once again, Jacob comes to the rescue and saves Bella from her death.

Edward mistakenly hears that Bella has died and travels to Italy to sacrifice himself. Alice and Bella race off to save him leaving Jacob hurt and very angry. Jacob is disgusted on hearing that Edward had returned and Bella had taken him back.

Eclipse

Eclipse sees Jacob distance himself from Bella, avoiding her phone calls and only sending her very brief messages as to why he couldn’t see her. After hearing Edward and Bella had gone away for the weekend, Jacob breaks the silence and calls Bella to check she is still human.

On their return Jacob visits Bella and Edward to discuss the imminent return of Victoria the vampire and explains to Bella that he still misses her and hopes they can remain friends. With Edward Cullen’s approval, Bella starts spending more time with Jacob. On one occasion Jacob confesses his love for Bella and wants her to leave Edward for him. Bella explains that she only thinks of him as a good friend.

Meanwhile, information has spread that Victoria is behind a group of evil vampires who broke into Bella’s home. Jacob and the Quileute’s form an alliance with the Cullen family to protect Bella and stop the newborn vampires from attacking anyone else. Before the battle Jacob finds out that Bella and Edward are getting engaged, this angers Jacob and he threatens to kill himself. Bella kisses him passionately in an attempt to stop him. As Jacob leaves to go into battle with the newborn’s, Bella realises she loves Jacob but can’t live without Edward.

Once the battle was over and everything had returned to normal Jacob receives a wedding invitation from Edward. The impact and implication breaks Jacob’s heart and he runs off to be alone. Trying to look desperately for his own soulmate, someone that he can love and also to be loved in return. During this installment Jacobs physicality changes dramatically, he has a huge growth spurt making him stand at 6′5 and now also sports a tattoo and cuts his long hair off to a much shorter style.

Breaking Dawn

Breaking Dawn sees Jacob return to attend Bella and Edward’s wedding. Although he is clearly upset by her decision to marry Edward and become a vampire, he explains to Bella that all it wants is for her to be happy.

When Bella and Edward return from their honeymoon, Jacob learns that Bella is pregnant with a half-vampire, half-human child and has become extremely week.

Jacob decides to inform the Quileute of the pregnancy, the packs leader ‘Sam Uley’ puts in place plans to attack the Cullen family and kill Bella. This is because they believe the baby could pose a threat due it being half-human/half-vampire.

Jacob disobeys Sam’s orders and separates from the rest of the pack as he believes the Cullen’s and Bella are innocent. Jacob self-fulfilling prophecy as the alpha werewolf becomes true as he becomes the leader of his own pack, joined later by Seth and Leah Clearwater. Together they protect the Cullen’s and Bella and the child is born. Jacob wants someone to love and at a certain point, during transforamtion he ‘imprints’ upon Renesmee Cullen. Jacob vows to protect her and feels a love stronger than anything else before. It is suggested that the two will become romantically involoved upon her reaching adulthood.
